The gable roof: the proven classic

Short answer: The gable roof (Satteldach) is the most widespread roof shape in Germany: two pitched roof surfaces meet at the ridge. It's regarded as particularly economical because it's simple to construct, robust and well protected against rain and snow. Depending on the roof pitch, usable living space is created in the attic, albeit with sloping ceilings. The gable roof suits many building styles, is offered by almost every prefab-house manufacturer and can be approved without trouble in most building areas. For clients on a limited budget it's often the obvious choice.

The strength of the gable roof lies in its economy and longevity: the clear geometry reduces construction and maintenance effort, and the pitched surfaces reliably drain precipitation. The usable living space in the attic depends heavily on the roof pitch and the height of the knee wall (Kniestock) – a higher knee wall creates more standing height at the external walls. The flat roof: modern and versatile

Short answer: The flat roof (Flachdach) stands for modern, cubic architecture and offers design freedom. It has only a slight or no visible pitch and allows full-height rooms in the attic without sloping ceilings. The roof surface can be used as a roof terrace, a green roof or a generous PV area. In return, a flat roof requires careful sealing and drainage as well as regular maintenance to stay watertight over time. In some building areas it isn't permitted, which is why you should check the development plan in advance. When properly executed, the flat roof is today durable and popular.

The biggest advantage of the flat roof is the full usability of the upper floor: instead of sloping ceilings, rooms with straight wall heights are created, which makes furnishing and the sense of space easier. In addition, the level surface opens up options such as a roof terrace, greening or a large, low-shading photovoltaic system. Set against these merits are higher demands on sealing, drainage and maintenance – a flat roof is less forgiving of execution errors than a pitched roof. The hip roof: prestigious and weatherproof

Short answer: With the hip roof (Walmdach), not only the two long sides but also the two gable ends are sloped, so that pitched roof surfaces are created on all four sides. This looks harmonious and prestigious and protects the facade especially well against wind and weather. The structure, however, is more elaborate and more expensive than a gable roof, and the sloped gable ends cost living space in the attic. The hip roof is often found on detached, high-quality single-family houses and bungalows. It conveys a calm, dignified overall impression.

The hip roof is the most demanding of the classic roof shapes in formal terms: the surfaces pitched all round give the house a closed, balanced silhouette and provide the facade with structural weather protection on every side. This design and structural quality comes at a price – more material, more construction effort and, thanks to the additional slopes, less usable space under the roof. As a variation there's the half-hip roof (Krüppelwalmdach), in which the gable ends are only partly hipped; it combines the character of the hip roof with a little more living space. Short answer: The mono-pitched roof (Pultdach) consists of a single roof surface sloping in one direction, which makes it look modern and unfussy. It combines the advantages of the gable and flat roof: the pitched surface drains precipitation well and is excellently suited to a south-facing photovoltaic system, while plenty of standing height is created on the high side of the upper floor. Mono-pitched roofs are comparatively simple to construct and often cheaper than hip roofs. Their clear line suits modern architecture well and can be combined with large window areas.

For clients who value solar energy, the mono-pitched roof is often the most rational choice: a single large, evenly pitched surface can be fitted optimally with photovoltaics or solar thermal, without a ridge dividing the surface. At the same time, the one-sided pitch creates an exciting sense of space with a high wall on the raised side. If the mono-pitched roof is combined with an offset variant, a band of light is created between the two roof surfaces that brings additional daylight into the upper floor. Which roof shape is the most economical?

What is the difference between a hip roof and a pyramid roof?
With the hip roof, in addition to the two main roof surfaces, the gable sides are also pitched, so that an all-round, pitched roof results. The pyramid roof (Zeltdach) consists of four equally pitched surfaces that converge at a point and suits square floor plans such as town villas. Both are usually more expensive than a gable roof.
