Is 100 m² enough for a family of four?
With a good layout, yes: two children's rooms of 10 to 12 m² each, a master bedroom, a family bathroom and an open living area of 35 m² fit well into 100 m² on paper. The compromise is the missing extra room – a home office or guest room has to move into niches or the converted attic. Anyone who permanently needs two workspaces at home is better off planning 110 to 120 m².
Why is the 100 m² class so sought after?
It marks the sweet spot of cost and benefit: compared with 140 m², you save around EUR 100,000 in construction costs plus ongoing energy and maintenance costs, while only losing area that many families rarely use. Plot requirements drop too. Rising construction and interest costs have brought this sensible size further into focus since 2023.
