Short answer: Since 2023, the Quality Seal for Sustainable Buildings (QNG) has been the state gateway to the highest KfW funding tier (KFN 298). Among other things, it assesses the life-cycle environmental balance, the global warming potential, the absence of pollutants, accessibility and indoor air quality — noticeably more than a plain efficiency house under the Building Energy Act (Gebäudeenergiegesetz, GEG).
In 2026, QNG-Plus or QNG-Premium are part of the standard offering at premium brands such as Baufritz, Schwörer, FingerHaus and Bien-Zenker. Timber as a building material: its environmental balance and recyclability

The study "Potentials of Building with Timber" by the Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt) shows that a consistent timber construction method produces significantly fewer emissions than solid construction — provided the timber comes from sustainable forestry and, at the end of its life, is reused as material rather than burned.
