A solar system has rarely been as economical as in 2026: 0% VAT on purchase and installation, a tax-free feed-in tariff for surplus electricity, the favourable KfW programme 270 for photovoltaics and storage — supplemented by regional grants from many municipalities, especially for battery storage and balcony power plants. A balcony power plant with storage — does it make sense?
If you are rarely at home during the day, yes: a small battery (1 to 2 kWh) shifts the solar power into the evening and brings self-consumption to nearly 100 percent. The additional €400 to €1,000 pays off after 5 to 8 years, depending on your consumption pattern. Anyone who uses a lot of electricity during the day is often fine with the classic balcony power plant without storage.
What is the difference between photovoltaics and solar thermal?
Photovoltaic modules produce electricity, whereas solar thermal collectors produce heat for hot water and heating support. If only one roof surface is available, photovoltaics is usually the smarter choice in 2026: the electricity can be used universally — including for the heat pump.
