Frequently Asked Questions About the PV Calculator

How much electricity does a photovoltaic system on a prefabricated house generate?
As a rough rule of thumb, a system in Germany produces between about 900 kWh in the north and around 1,150 kWh in the south per year for each installed kilowatt-peak (south-facing roof, good pitch). An 8 kWp system therefore generates between roughly 7,200 and 9,200 kWh per year, depending on location. East-west roofs deliver slightly less, but spread the generation more evenly across the day. All figures are simplified model values, as of 2026.
How does self-consumption affect the economics?
Every kilowatt-hour you consume yourself replaces expensive grid electricity (model assumption 35 ct/kWh, as of 2026) and is therefore far more valuable than electricity fed into the grid, which in 2026 is remunerated at around 8 ct/kWh. A higher self-consumption share noticeably improves the economics. Without a battery storage system, self-consumption in a single-family home is often between 25 and 35 percent, and considerably higher with storage.
How quickly does a PV system pay for itself?
The rough payback period is the investment divided by the annual benefit from self-consumption and feed-in. With a model assumption of around 1,500 euros per kWp and good yield conditions, it often falls within the range of ten to fourteen years. The figure is deliberately calculated in a simplified way, without interest, price increases, maintenance and module degradation. This is a simplified model calculation.
